Up on the roof

*He's been awake for a while, just watching her sleep. This time around, there's no comfort in the slow rhythmic movement of her sleeping frame. His swimming thoughts are all out of the pool, afraid of the shark that's just appeared in the water. How the hell did that get there?
Air, he needs air, and though it pains him to leave her alone in the apartment, he has to get out of this tent.

He slips out of bed without disturbing her, finds a pair of shorts to wear, and heads out on to the roof. He can only assume that it's night because the lights in the tent are not yet lit. The outside sky is no help. It's still the same night it has been since he first arrived. Barefoot he begins to run, leaping from rooftop to rooftop. For a while he's almost convinced himself that things are okay, that they're normal. That is until he goes for a hand hold from a shorter building to an adjecent taller one, and the extra fingers get in the way. The fall isn't a long one, maybe 5 feet, but he's winded enough by the landing to remind him that he's lacking his shell. He stays there, flat on his back, for a minute or two, watching the frozen starlight above him.

Eventually he stands up, brushes himself off, and heads back to the roof of Milliways. Raph listens for tell tale signs of life from inside the tent. When he hears none he enters, makes his way to the fridge for a beer, and leaves again silent as ever.

He can feel the slight bruise forming on his back from the fall. Raph opens the beer and takes a seat on the edge of the roof looking out over his frozen city.
Nothing's been solved, no questions answered, but at least no one got punched. For Raph, that's an achievement.*

Was that really necessary?

*he's not sure what he likes the shirt for more: the fact that it means he's not going to get a further scolding, or the fact that there's now a naked Penny on his roof. He slowly pulls the shirt off his head, and wraps it around his bleeding hand. In a flash (no pun intended) he's picked Penny up in a Fireman's carry and is bringing her inside the tent.*

From the beginning? Oh geez. Okay.

Rats are smart like. People don't give'em enough credit. Got memories like you wouldn't believe. So when my Master Splinter watched his Master Yoshi practice the martial art of Ninjitsu, he remembered it. Master Yoshi was murdered by a rival. Splinter remembered him too, but there wasn't a whole lot a rat in New York City could do. That is until he happened upon me and my brothers. We were just hatchlings then, dropped and covered in chemical waste.

Splinter cleaned us up and watched over us. The stuff we were covered in made us what we are...or I was. It changes Splinter too. He raised us like his kids, and we became his students. Our main mission was to avenge Master Yoshi. Which we did around about our 14th birthday.

We were around 10 or 11 for our first mission.

Things went on as normal as they ever were. Met our first human friend, April. Saved her from a bunch of demented killer robots. Lost Splinter in the process. Ended up in space, it gets all wierd sometimes. Met Casey, had a few laughs at the expense of some gang banger kids.

Then Christmas Eve the guy we thought was dead came back. He jumped my brother Leo, and threw him through the apartment window. Barely made it outta the building before they blew the sucker up. Ended up spendin' a year in Western Mass.

Returned to New York to finish the job. Leo finished it. We burned the fuckers body down by the East River.

Then Leo tried to pull me off him. Got him so bad Don ran for Splinter. The only thing I remember about that was the sound of him hitting the wall and landing on the floor.

I just stormed out after that, and ended up here.
