*The door opens to what appears to be a standard issue hospital suite.
Various monitors and machines whirr and beep in the working gloom.
To the left of the door is a small desk, to the right a locked cabinet with glass doors.
But the most eye catching thing in the whole room isn't the machines or the desk, or even the locked cabinet, it's the man in the bed directly across from the door.
The man that those employed here refer to by nothing more than a number.

And she sees him.
The world goes very quiet, and very still, and just a little bit colder.

Too slow for sleep.
His breathing.
His heartbeat.
Both too slow for mere sleep.*

Date: 2006-08-23 11:45 pm (UTC)She's pissed.
...eventually, she realizes that she still has a rat to deal with.
Death calms herself enough to turn to said rat.
"Are you ready?"

"Well bugger that for a lark!"
Wee beady eyes focus on the man in the bed.
"They do this to their own kind as well, hmm? I don't find that surprising in the slightest. Did you come for him as well?"

"It's generally not fun. Sometimes. But not generally."

"The others, will they be all right?"

"bloody traps."
He mutters to no one in particular.

Her hands are shaking, just a little.

"Stiff upper lip, chaps. We'll soon meet again, though hopefully not too soon."
After giving his fur one final smooth down, he looks over at the black cat that sits to his left.
"Ready when you are."

Date: 2006-08-24 12:17 am (UTC)Death reaches out.
There is the sound of wings.
...some time later, she is back, and standing next to the man on the bed.
"Baby..."

Date: 2006-08-24 12:29 am (UTC)Eyes flutter, muscles tense, and something deep within him growls.
The something wants out. It fights against the restraints that keep it tied to the bed.
Sudden movement shifts the sheet which covers the man, exposing his torso.
Something is missing. Something that should be where fresh sutures now reside.
Livid skin held together with black string railroads a path across his chest. It's a familar pattern, one she's seen countless times before.
Over his shoulder, where a silver scar sits, is a dressing of gauze.*

Date: 2006-08-24 12:33 am (UTC)"Shh, baby. Shhh. We're gonna get you out of here. Soon."
She can't do it herself. Not without damaging him further.
Instead, she leans over, and brushes the hair away from his face.
They cut him open.
While he was still alive.
Somewhere, a star explodes.
